The early development of the game was affected by the lack of a coherent vision. Despite these problems, FromSoftware staff member Hidetaka Miyazaki was able to take over the project by taking over as director and turning the game into what it ultimately was. The difficulty was meant to evoke classic video games and provide a sense of challenge and accomplishment for gamers. This aspect proved demanding for Miyazaki, due to his fear that Sony would ask the team to reduce the difficulty of the title to make it more accessible to the public.
